JIM1101A
PERSONAL EXAMPLE : LESBIAN

First time i saw her at the class 3 Cendekiawan. She was alone by herself. She wore a tight T-shirt and jeans like a man and the other girl wore a blouse. The 19 years-old girl, Ain is my best friend. Before this, she was a good girl. Suddenly, Ain became a “Pengkid” because she was tired of being deceived by a man and she was raped by her cousin who was older than her. From that point, she did not get any attention from her family. Moreover, she had been influenced by her friends who had been through the same experience. She decided to change her appearance from female to male. Ain life was full of bad experiences and now, she lives in a dark situation where she is happy outside but not in onside. There are several reasons that cause woman to change into “Pengkid”, such as family problems, environment, and the past experiences.

One of the causes of why woman become a “Pengkid” is family problems. As all know, family is a group of individuals that are close to us. If something bad happens, it certainly will affect our lives. For example, if our father had married another woman, the attention he gave to us will be reduced and this will result in a fragile family relationships. Therefore, this family relationships should be treated with care.

Besides that, another reason of why woman become a “Pengkid” is from environment. Environment is essential to ensure our daily lives. If this is not taken seriously, then it will destroy our lives in the future. For example, if we hang out with good people, then we will be good as them. However, if we hang out with people who were not so, the opposite was the one who will be able to. As a result, we must be clever in adapting to the environment.

Last but not least, the past experience is also the another excuse of why woman become a “Pengkid”. Many people say that experience is a valueable and also the experience of our mature. Good experience will make us more confident, while the bad experience will cause us more trauma. For example, if we had been raped, then this will cause us to feel depressed and preoccupied overshadowed last story. So, we must persevere in the face of these vagaries of life.

As a conclusion, family problems, environment, and the past experience are the major reasons that can occur based on why woman become a “Pengkid” in the society. We should think further about this issues before it become more serious and give an impact to the next generations.

- Past Perfect Tense -

   09 FEBRUARY 2012..........

Assalamualaikum w.b.t....About today's class, we learn about "past perfect tense". The Past Perfect Tense describes an action which took place before another action in the past.

The past perfect tense is often used in English when we are relating two events which happened in the past. It helps to show which event happened first. This page will explain the rules for forming and using the tense.

Forming the past perfect tense

Using the Past Perfect

The past perfect is used to show you which of two events happened first. Imagine that two things happened in the past:

I went to see the movie.

We discussed the movie in class.

Here, we don't know which order the events happened in. That may be important -- perhaps I went to see the movie after the discussion, or maybe I saw the movie before the discussion. There are many ways to make this sequence clear, and the past perfect is one of them. This is how we do it:

I went to see the movie. We had discussed it in class.

Here, we KNOW that the discussion took place FIRST -- even though the sentence describing it comes afterwards. We discussed the movie, and THEN I went to see it. This can be very useful when you are telling a story or relating a sequence of events. At any point in your story, you can jump BACK to a previous event, and your reader will not be confused, because the past perfect will make it clear that the event happened previously. Here is another example:

I wanted to live in a foreign country, so I applied for a job in Japan. Judy lived in Japan, so I called her to find out more about the culture and lifestyle there.
(Judy was probably still living in Japan when I called her.)

I wanted to live in a foreign country, so I applied for a job in Japan. Judy had lived in Japan, so I called her to find out more about the culture and lifestyle there.
(Judy no longer lived in Japan -- she returned from there before I applied for the job.)

- The Present Perfect -

   08 FEBRUARY 2012..........

Assalamualaikum w.b.t....We also learn about the present perfect. The present perfect tense expresses past actions with no specific time indicated.

FORM

[has/have + past participle]
Examples:
  • You have seen that movie many times.
  • Have you seen that movie many times?
  • You have not seen that movie many times.

USE 1 Unspecified Time Before Now

We use the Present Perfect to say that an action happened at an unspecified time before now. The exact time is not important. You CANNOT use the Present Perfect with specific time expressions such as: yesterday, one year ago, last week, when I was a child, when I lived in Japan, at that moment, that day, one day, etc. We CAN use the Present Perfect with unspecific expressions such as: ever, never, once, many times, several times, before, so far, already, yet, etc.
Examples:
  • have seen that movie twenty times.
  • I think I have met him once before.
  • There have been many earthquakes in California.
  • People have traveled to the Moon.
  • People have not traveled to Mars.
  • Have you read the book yet?
  • Nobody has ever climbed that mountain.
  • A: Has there ever been a war in the United States?
B: Yes, there has been a war in the United States.

How Do You Actually Use the Present Perfect?

TOPIC 1 Experience

You can also use this tense to say that you have never had a certain experience. The Present Perfect is NOT used to describe a specific event.
Examples:
  • have been to France.
This sentence means that you have had the experience of being in France. Maybe you have been there once, or several times.
  • have been to France three times.
You can add the number of times at the end of the sentence.
  • have never been to France.
This sentence means that you have not had the experience of going to France.
  • I think I have seen that movie before.
  • He has never traveled by train.
  • Joan has studied two foreign languages.
  • A: Have you ever met him?
B: No, I have not met him.

TOPIC 2 Change Over Time

We often use the Present Perfect to talk about change that has happened over a period of time.
Examples:
  • You have grown since the last time I saw you.
  • The government has become more interested in arts education.
  • Japanese has become one of the most popular courses at the university since the Asian studies program was established.
  • My English has really improved since I moved to Australia.

TOPIC 3 Accomplishments

We often use the Present Perfect to list the accomplishments of individuals and humanity. You cannot mention a specific time.
Examples:
  • Man has walked on the Moon.
  • Our son has learned how to read.
  • Doctors have cured many deadly diseases.
  • Scientists have split the atom.

TOPIC 4 An Uncompleted Action You Are Expecting

Using the Present Perfect suggests that we are still waiting for the action to happen.
Examples:
  • James has not finished his homework yet.
  • Susan hasn't mastered Japanese, but she can communicate.
  • Bill has still not arrived.
  • The rain hasn't stopped.

TOPIC 5 Multiple Actions at Different Times

. Present Perfect suggests the process is not complete and more actions are possible.
Examples:
  • The army has attacked that city five times.
  • have had four quizzes and five tests so far this semester.
  • We have had many major problems while working on this project.
  • She has talked to several specialists about her problem, but nobody knows why she is sick.

Time Expressions with Present Perfect

When we use the Present Perfect it means that something has happened at some point in our lives before now. Remember, the exact time the action happened is not important.
Sometimes, we want to limit the time we are looking in for an experience. We can do this with expressions such as: in the last week, in the last year, this week, this month, so far, up to now, etc.
Examples:
  • Have you been to Mexico in the last year?
  • have seen that movie six times in the last month.
  • They have had three tests in the last week.
  • She graduated from university less than three years ago. She has worked for three different companies so far.
  • My car has broken down three times this week.

NOTICE

"Last year" and "in the last year" are very different in meaning. "Last year" means the year before now, and it is considered a specific time which requires Simple Past. "In the last year" means from 365 days ago until now. It is not considered a specific time, so it requires Present Perfect.
Examples:
  • went to Mexico last year.
I went to Mexico in the calendar year before this one.
  • have been to Mexico in the last year.
I have been to Mexico at least once at some point between 365 days ago and now.

USE 2 Duration From the Past Until Now (Non-Continuous Verbs)

With Non-Continuous Verbs and non-continuous uses of Mixed Verbs, we use the Present Perfect to show that something started in the past and has continued up until now. "For five minutes," "for two weeks," and "since Tuesday" are all durations which can be used with the Present Perfect.
Examples:
  • have had a cold for two weeks.
  • She has been in England for six months.
  • Mary has loved chocolate since she was a little girl.

FORM

[am/is/are + present participle]
Examples:
  • You are watching TV.
  • Are you watching TV?
  • You are not watching TV.
Complete List of Present Continuous Forms

USE 1 Now

Use the Present Continuous with Normal Verbs to express the idea that something is happening now, at this very moment. It can also be used to show that something is not happening now.
Examples:
  • You are learning English now.
  • You are not swimming now.
  • Are you sleeping?

  • They are reading their books.
  • They are not watching television.
  • What are you doing?
  • Why aren't you doing your homework?

USE 2 Longer Actions in Progress Now

In English, "now" can mean: this second, today, this month, this year, this century, and so on. Sometimes, we use the Present Continuous to say that we are in the process of doing a longer action which is in progress; however, we might not be doing it at this exact second.
Examples: (All of these sentences can be said while eating dinner in a restaurant.)
  • am studying to become a doctor.
  • am not studying to become a dentist.
  • am reading the book Tom Sawyer.
  • am not reading any books right now.
  • Are you working on any special projects at work?

USE 3 Near Future

Sometimes, speakers use the Present Continuous to indicate that something will or will not happen in the near future.
Examples:
  • am meeting some friends after work.
  • am not going to the party tonight.
  • Is he visiting his parents next weekend?
  • Isn't he coming with us tonight?

USE 4 Repetition and Irritation with "Always"

The Present Continuous with words such as "always" or "constantly" expresses the idea that something irritating or shocking often happens. Notice that the meaning is like Simple Present, but with negative emotion. Remember to put the words "always" or "constantly" between "be" and "verb+ing."
Examples:
  • She is always coming to class late.
  • He is constantly talking. I wish he would shut up.
  • I don't like them because they are always complaining.

- Fifth Group Presentation -

   02 FEBRUARY 2012........

Assalamualaikum w.b.t....The group need to present about Simple Present Tense. It was by Nazira, Fadhilah, Siti Maisarah and Harif.

What is a simple present tense???
The simple present tense describes a habitual action, a fact and a general statement. For example ::
>> I wake up at 7a.m every morning.
     (routine)
   * smile + s = smiles
   * teach + es = teaches
   * carry + ies = carries
   * cry + ies = cries

How do we make the Simple Present Tense?

subject+auxiliary verb+main verb
  do base
There are three important exceptions:
  1. For positive sentences, we do not normally use the auxiliary.
  2. For the 3rd person singular (he, she, it), we add s to the main verb or es to the auxiliary.
  3. For the verb to be, we do not use an auxiliary, even for questions and negatives.
Look at these examples with the main verb like:
 subjectauxiliary verb main verb
+I, you, we, they likecoffee.
He, she, it likescoffee.
-I, you, we, theydonotlikecoffee.
He, she, itdoesnotlikecoffee.
?DoI, you, we, they likecoffee?
Doeshe, she, it likecoffee?
Look at these examples with the main verb be. Notice that there is no auxiliary:
 subjectmain verb
+Iam French.
You, we, theyare French.
He, she, itis French.
-Iamnotold.
You, we, theyarenotold.
He, she, itisnotold.
?AmI late?
Areyou, we, they late?
Ishe, she, it late?

How do we use the Simple Present Tense?

We use the simple present tense when:
  • the action is general
  • the action happens all the time, or habitually, in the past, present and future
  • the action is not only happening now
  • the statement is always true
John drives a taxi.
pastpresentfuture

It is John's job to drive a taxi. He does it every day. Past, present and future.
Look at these examples:
  • I live in New York.
  • The Moon goes round the Earth.
  • John drives a taxi.
  • He does not drive a bus.
  • We meet every Thursday.
  • We do not work at night.
  • Do you play football?
Note that with the verb to be, we can also use the simple present tense for situations that are not general. We can use the simple present tense to talk about now. Look at these examples of the verb "to be" in the simple present tense - some of them are general, some of them are now:
Am I right?
Tara is not at home.
You are happy.
pastpresentfuture

The situation is now.

I am not fat.
Why are you so beautiful?
Ram is tall.
pastpresentfuture

The situation is general. Past, present and future.
